After reblogging that sock knitting post last night I remember that if I want my feet to stop being cold I should pull out my hand knit socks and put them on. I am also now overcome with the urge to knit more socks.

Haha same though šŸ˜› and I already have like 2 pairs on the needles right now for gifts.

Ugh I have so may WIPs it really isn’t funny. I straight up have a gigantic floor basket (the kind that would usually be used for laundry) full of them. But… yah know… what if I cast on more socks? :)))

You would be happy. Because casting on socks is happy-making :))))

You speak extremely wise words.

Deplatform Fash Pagans

It is not worth giving fascists a space to speak. Giving them a chance or even a response means giving them a dignity and a platform they don’t deserve. Deplatforming has worked – see Milo Y’s college talks, for example. There’s plenty shittiness out there thay we as pagans need not spread nor magnify. You are not more enlightened or compassionate just because you are willing to share the ideologies that wish to kill us and our families.

Engaging in a debate with the ā€œother sideā€ is of limited use. Healthy debate and discussion is always a good opportunity to learn and grow, but some people are simply too stubborn at the moment, too blinded by toxic racism and such.

People ass deep into fascism or alt right bullshit won’t realize their mistakes until something substantial (like a near death experience or a loved one cutting ties with them) happens. As an internet stranger it is neither your duty nor worth your time to attempt this.

If you are having a discussion and you find out the other party is of such leaning and feel conflicted by some of their more cutting points:

Someone who is not an idiotic violent nerd has made the same point, probably better, somewhere else.

Basically: Don’t give pagan neo nazis/fash the time of day, block, report, or humiliate them but debate will not be fruitful. I struggle with this myself, but I find that they are so immature and stubborn that I cannot reach them nor touch and change them. People like Galina and even the rest of the so-called Piety Posse (to some extend Edward Butler) need to be deplatformed until their racism dies off.

thank gods someone on this hellsite

used the phrase Piety Posse in regards to the right people.

I’m also in the ā€œlikes knitting but is terrified of socksā€ category, do you have any tips on needle gauge, material, or patterns?

Knitting Socks 101

image

I like thisĀ Basic Sock pattern because this one works with both fingering/sock weight yarn, and has instructions for worsted weight as well.

What Yarn to Buy

So, if you have never knitted socks before, using a worsted weight is nice because they will knit up a lot faster.

If you don’t mind hand washing and laying flat to dry, Wool of the Andes is a nice, inexpensive wool, that knits up into a cozy pair of socks.

If you need to be able to wash and dry your socks in a machine, you’ll want superwash yarn. There’s a Wool of the Andes SuperwashĀ and a Swish Superwash. You will pay a little more for the superwash in the wool.

Another option is an acrylic yarn. There’s BravaĀ which is really cheap, but not a terrible yarn. For your very first pair, this might be what I’d pick if you are really uncertain. But I will generally always prefer a wool.

And of course there is also a huge amount of fingering weight options available.

Knitting Needles

You can knit socks, two at a time, on a cable needle, but I personally prefer double pointed needles.

It’s personal preference whether you like metal, plastic, or wooden needles. I personally am in LOVE with bamboo needles.

Specifically the Caspian Needles from Knit Picks. But any DPNs you’re comfortable with will do!

For fingering/sock yarn you’ll want size 1 or 1 ½. And for worsted you’ll want size 3.

Second Sock Syndrome

What often happens, when a person makes one sock, is that doing the second sock of the pair can feel like a slog, lol. To combat this, it’s usually suggested to knit both at the same time.

I will generally do the cuff up to the heel flap on one, then on the next. Then the heel flap on one, and the next. Then turn, then the foot, then the toe – working first one sock, then its twin.

Stitches You Need to Know

People are always so intimidated by socks, but the trick is to take it one stitch at a time. Don’t try and wrap your brain around the entire process, just follow each step of the instructions.

To knit a sock using the pattern I linked you’ll need to know

  • knit in the round on DPNs (not as tough as it seems!)
  • how to long tail or cable cast on
  • knit and purl
  • knit two together (and purl two together)
  • slip slip knit
  • pick up a stitch

And that’s it. All very, very basic knitting stitches.

I hope that helps!

I endorse this post 100%. Especially the part about not trying to wrap your head around the whole thing, just take it one stitch at a time. And honestly, the part that scared me most (turning the heel) became my favorite part. One other tip I’d add is that if you aren’t used to working at a small gauge, maybe don’t choose a dark color of yarn. It makes it harder to see the stitches. I do really like variegated yarns, though, because they help me keep my place when i’m counting stitches!

I agree with everything said here! Socks are surprisingly simple and are an absolute joy to knit! Plus there are few things as satisfying as slipping your feet into a pair of hand knit socks. Happy knitting!
